要讀懂今天的句子確實很難!大家先得知道：本周英國首相特蕾莎•梅和蘇格蘭首席大臣(First Minister)妮古拉•斯特金兩位政治女強人就脫歐和蘇格蘭獨立公投(Scotland independence referendum)等重點議題進行會晤。然而此次關(guān)系到英國統(tǒng)一團結(jié)的歷史事件卻被每日郵報次日的封面標(biāo)題搶了風(fēng)頭。因為郵報即沒有關(guān)注蘇格蘭趁脫歐打劫一事，也沒有推究英國政府會給出什么樣的胡蘿卜和大棒(carrot and stick)，而是心心念念地糾結(jié)兩位老大誰的腿比較美(標(biāo)題是：Never mind Brexit, who won legs-it! 最后一個詞是模仿Brexit造出來的)。一石擊起千層浪(attracted hundreds of complaints)。許多讀者寫郵件給郵報編輯部，指責(zé)文章不尊重職業(yè)女性(women in profession)，仍帶著上個世紀(jì)的男權(quán)價值觀去看待有卓越才華的女性。包括衛(wèi)報在內(nèi)的兄弟媒體們也紛紛發(fā)文抨擊。這里選的句子是典型的英式痛罵，利用反語(irony)、反問(rhetoric question)和輕描淡寫的語氣(understatement)來表達百分之兩百的瞧不起(distain)。再提一下當(dāng)事人的反應(yīng)。梅姨拒絕置評(refuse to be drawn into the row爭吵)，她對媒體說：“別指望我會對媒體該說什么不該說什么指手劃腳。”(梅姨總能比別人看得更高些，把握住真正的重點：媒體言論自由。)而斯特金則直接指責(zé)郵報沙文主義(male chauvinism and sexism)。對于各種批評，郵報的回復(fù)是:“別胡扯了!我們只是想輕松下。”(Get a life!
